The Sunday Salon- 10/4

Good afternoon everyone! I'm getting a bit of a late start as it has been a lazy day in my household. My parents have my children for the weekend which meant I slept in for the 1st time in probably two years. We had a wedding last night so it has been an enjoyable weekend so far but unfortunately it has been book-less. I'm hoping to remedy that today at least until my babies are brought back to me :)

In reading news, I'm currently reading Booked To Die by John Dunning. Although I'm not very far into it yet, I am liking what I've read so far. I thought that it would be interesting to read a mystery that is centered around books and it has been. I plan on reading a good chunk of it today. I'm also still reading The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins. It is such a good book but I'm taking it slowly and reading a little bit from it each day. This really seems to be working for me and I'm thinking that maybe I should keep doing this with other classics or chunksters.

In other reading news, I recently finished a book that ended up being a bit of a disappointment to me as a reader. Especially since I so loved the 1st book by this author. I'll admit to having troubles now with what to write in the review...I may wait awhile before I post my thoughts. It begs the question of how do you all handle negative review writing...I don't want to come across as too critical and I do want the good points to come across. BUT...the bad parts need to be shared as well as I honestly wouldn't be comfortable recommending this one without reservations.

Anyways, I'm planning on reading, watching football, reading, and reading/visiting your blogs today. Hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing Sunday!

  2. Diane- It does seem that there are a lot of people reading The Woman in White. I've had it sitting on my shelf for some time now and I'm glad that I'm finally getting to it.

  3. Isn't sleeping in grand? It's not something I get to do too often either, but when I do, I love it!

I am glad you had a good time at the wedding. Hopefully you were able to fit in some reading today.

I've been really curious about John Dunning's series and so look forward to reading what you think of it.

The Women in White is definitely a novel to savor, I agree. I am glad you are enjoying it!

I recently read a book that I liked, but I have some pointed criticisms that I am sure the author won't receive well. Since she's the one who sent me the book, I know she'll be reading my review. I strive to be honest though and so can't not say something. Fortunately, I did like the book overall so my review won't be completely negative. All this to say I understand what you're going through.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  4. I'm looking forward to watching Mad Men tonight on AMC. It's my new favorite thing to do on Sunday night! I remember those days of being able to sleep in; how treasured they are when they are few.

  6. Glad you had a good time at the wedding Sam and got to sleep in! I always try to focus on the good in a review but do nicely point out anything negative as well. I think as long as you do it in a nice and constructive, not mean, way that an author should respect that. Hope you got some book reading in. I haven't today at all.

  7. Good luck with that negative review - those are always difficult to write, but sometimes it's just important to be honest. I have to admit that I'm curious to find out what book it is in regards to!

  8. I think if you can't recommend a book without reservations, then you need to share that and why. For me I'd rather know what a person didn't like about a book than what they did. That sounds weird, but it's true. :) Reviews don't have to be completely negative, though--point out what you did like, too!!

  9. The way I handle negative reviews is to offer a balance between what I liked and what I didn't. Hope you enjoy your reads!

  10. Literary Feline- I think that is one of the problems that I have been having. She has left a comment on my blog previously so I at least want to convey some positive thoughts even if I didn't end up liking it as much as I wanted to.

Bellezza- Sleeping in until 8:30 is usually a treat for me so waking up on my own without anyone else waking me up was unheard of :)

Staci- That sure does sound like perfect reading weather if I do say so myself.

Dar- I did get some reading in but not as much as I wanted to. Oh well, that's life sometimes.

Heatherlo- I strive to be as honest as possible but I do think that it is harder to write a good negative review than it is to write a positive one.

Trish- I will definitely be sharing my thoughts on it as honestly as possible but I'll try to throw in the positives as well.

Ladytink- Thanks for sharing. I think that I am going to try and write the review sooner rather than later to get it off of my mind.

  11. Sleeping in is even more wonderful for many of us because it's so rare.

I think you can be honest and tactful at the same time. Try to find a few positive things to say--but you don't have to be enthusiastic about every book you read.

  12. Suko- Thanks for the input. I decided to write the review and just get it over with..I don't need to be worrying about it for no reason.

  13. Sam, I forgot to complete my thought process earlier regarding negative reviews. It happens, and I usually sum up the plot, state that I had high hopes for the book (which I do with any book i read), and then what I liked about it )if anything) and (what i did not care for). Hope that helps !

Sorry about your reading disappointment-it's so sad when that happens.
