Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris

Grave Sight was the first in this series and my introduction to Harper and Tolliver who are the main characters of this story. Harper was struck by lightning when she was younger and now can find the dead as well as see the last few moments leading up to their death. She makes a living by going to different places and helping people find answers to different situations involving dead or missing persons. But the missing persons have to be dead for her to be able to do anything. Tolliver is Harper's stepbrother and main support system who accompanies her around the country. Harper is called to a small town where she finds the body of a missing girl but before she knows it she is caught up in a mystery and danger is all around her.
I really liked Harper and thought that her "gifts" as you might call them led to an interesting read. I was wrapped up in this book and thought that it was a fast paced read. On the other hand, one of my dislikes (if you can call it that) was that Harper and Tolliver had a weird relationship. I didn't quite understand where the author was going with it so I'm eager to see how it evolves in the next book in this series. It was just different to be honest and I couldn't quite get a handle on it. I really enjoyed this book and will be continuing on with this series though. I'm a sucker for a mystery with some paranormal thrown in which is what this was. Harris is a fairly new author for me as I've only read one other book by her and I'm interested in reading more of her works.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

  1. I've read the first two books in this series, and I just love it! I agree, Harper is a wondeful character. The relationship continues to be weird with Harper and Tolliver, but I really sort of appreciate how complex and unusual it is (though it doesn't go anywhere definitive, if you know what I mean). There are so many ways in which this series is sort of fresh.

  3. I love Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series and her Lily Bard series. I hope to read this one eventually too. I am glad you enjoyed the first book in the series! I've heard mixed thoughts about Harper and Tolliver's relationship throughout the books. It'll be interesting to see how it evolves.

  10. Ladytink- I haven't read enough of either series to have a preference yet but I liked both series. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that their relationship was a bit off to say the least.

Naida- Another great author that you should give a try :)

  13. Yes, read all three. I wonder how you'll feel as it progresses. The best thing about this series is it's a bit dark. Love dark fiction.

  14. I plan on reading the next one soon so I'll let you know. Is she planning on writing more in this series I wonder?

  15. She says there will be four total and that's all. Fans are begging for more, but she's standing firm so far. The book is GRAVE SECRETS and it will be out next fall.

  17. Hi Samantha!

This is an interesting review considering that I just commented on someone's reply to my post about my disappointment over the succeeding books in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. I may have to try her other stories then and see if she's an author I'd like to read further (considering I finished all 8 books in the Southern Vampire series yet vowed never to pick up the succeeding books again). Oh, that's too dramatic :)

  18. Lightheaded- I skimmed your reviews of the Sookie series. I didn't want to read any spoilers (LOL!) but I was interested to see your enjoyment in the beginning and then how you felt about the later books. Let me know if you try any more books by this author :)

  19. I've just learnt of Charlaine Harris and her Southern Vampire series and have just finished reading Dead Until Dark and reading the last chapter of Grave Sight. I don't know as yet if I'm a fan or not.

However, regarding Tolliver and Harper I think that Charlaine Harris will eventually get them together seeing as they are not biologically related hence I think she will make it out that they are like childhood sweet hearts who have always loved each other unknowingly. It seems, from Grave Sight, that she's portraying the sexual tension and the slight jealousy between the two.

  20. Angelica Joy- I have to agree that there is jealousy and tension there. I don't know if they will end up together but I'm looking forward to finding out :)
